A Grand Lodge is a Masonic institution that governs several local or constituent Lodges. Grand Lodges in Ancient jurisdictions are usually operated at the state or provincial level in the United States and Canada, and at the national level elsewhere. Modern Grand Lodges, usually called Grand Orients, tend to operate at a national level if geography is considered at all.
Various Grand Lodges may sign treaties of amity with one another, which allow mutual recognition of their various rites and constituent Lodges.
